Botox Q & A

What is Botox®?

Botox is purified botulinum toxin A. When you inject it into the skin, it relaxes overactive facial muscles, allowing them to smooth and soften.

Most often, people seek out Botox treatment for cosmetic issues, such as worry lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, and smile lines.

In addition to cosmetic care, Keep Smiling Dental PC also offers Botox treatment for dental and oral health issues such as:

  • Teeth clenching
  • Muscle spasms in your face
  • Jaw tension
  • Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ)

The practice can also use Botox to eliminate gummy smiles that have developed as a result of excessive upper lip movement.

Is Botox treatment safe?

Like all injection treatments, Botox only poses a small risk of side effects and is quite safe. Possible side effects include localized redness, swelling, bruising, bleeding, or mild soreness.

Typically, these side effects fade quickly. To ease any discomfort, you may apply a cold compress or numbing cream.

To keep your treatment at its intended injection sites, avoid rubbing your face for several hours after treatment. Also avoid laying down, as either of these actions could cause the Botox to spread to other muscles.

How does Botox treatment for TMJ work?

Studies have shown that Botox injections can significantly reduce TMJ-related pain and increase your ability to move your mouth for up to three months at a time.

TMJ is a disorder that causes painful symptoms like:

  • Jaw tension
  • Teeth grinding
  • Headaches
  • Lockjaw

During a Botox treatment for TMJ, the Keep Smiling Dental PC team injects Botox directly into your jaw, temple, and forehead muscles. Depending on your symptoms, the practice may also inject it elsewhere.

Botox injections aren’t painful, but you may feel a sting like a bug bite at the injection site during treatment.

Botox injections for TMJ usually take between 10 minutes to half an hour to complete. Some people feel improvement in their TMJ within just a day or two, although most usually don’t feel the full effects of treatment for several days.
