Dental Bridges Q & A

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge restores your smile by replacing missing teeth with artificial teeth to, as the name implies, bridge the gap. They are attached to surrounding teeth and are often placed permanently into your mouth. Benefits of bridges include:

  • Restoring your smile
  • Boosting confidence
  • Preventing other teeth from drifting
  • Speaking more clearly
  • Helping you to chew properly

What are the different types of dental bridges?

Several types of dental bridges are available. The team works with you to determine which bridge is the best match for your needs.

Cantilever bridges

Cantilever bridges are used if you have only one natural tooth next to a gap, as these bridges are supported on one side only.

Traditional bridges

Traditional bridges consist of one or more artificial teeth, held in place by crowns. These bridges are secured in place on both sides by your natural teeth, and can even replace molars!

Implant-supported bridges

Implant-supported bridges are used when you have several missing teeth. These bridges are supported by dental implants (fake teeth), that hold the bridge in place.

Removable bridges

Removable bridges aren’t permanent, so you can take them out and put them back in as needed. The team helps determine if a removable bridge best fits your needs.

How are permanent bridges placed?

As with crowns, getting a bridge is a two-step process. During your first visit, your dentist prepares your teeth for the crown and takes impressions of your teeth. They then place a temporary bridge in your mouth while your permanent bridge is being made.

During your second visit, your dentist removes the temporary bridge and places a new permanent bridge.

How long do dental bridges last?

As long as you properly care for your teeth, dental bridges can last 10-15 years, or perhaps longer. Brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, and using an antibacterial mouthwash reduce further tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss.

Is a dental bridge right for me?

The team at Keep Smiling Dental PC helps determine if a dental bridge can “bridge the gap” caused by loose or missing teeth. When you’re ready to restore your smile and confidence, call Keep Smiling Dental PC to learn more or book an appointment online.
