Veneers Q & A

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are custom-made, thin porcelain shells that cover the visible portions of your teeth. They are among the most popular cosmetic dental treatments because they correct the appearance of more than one dental issue.

That also makes veneers an affordable option, as you can perfect your smile without coming in for multiple treatments over time. When you get a new set of veneers, you walk out with your new smile the same day.

What kinds of issues can dental veneers correct?

Dental veneers can improve many cosmetic issues. Because veneers fit over the entire visible portion of your teeth, your smile will be transformed on the day they are put into place by your dentist.

Some of the more common issues a great set of veneers can improve include:

  • Discoloration
  • Gapped teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Irregularities in the size or shape of teeth
  • Chipped teeth

Dental veneers are most often placed on the eight teeth in the top front portion of your mouth. However, some people benefit from veneers on their bottom teeth, depending on the shape of the mouth and smile.

Is it painful to get dental veneers?

The process of getting dental veneers is not painful. Your dentist takes dental impressions or digital scans to identify the exact shape and contouring of your teeth. That information is used to craft your custom veneers, so they fit perfectly over the surface of your teeth.

A small portion of your natural tooth tissue must be removed to make room for the new veneers. For this reason, veneers are considered a permanent treatment path. If your veneers eventually wear out, they’ll need to be replaced with a new set to protect your teeth from decay or damage.

You’ll receive a set of temporary veneers to wear while you wait for your permanent veneers to arrive. At that point, your dentist will check for fit and cement your veneers into place, completing the treatment.

How long will my new veneers last?

You can expect to get around 15 years or more from a new set of dental veneers. There are steps you can take to extend the life of your veneers.

Take care to avoid using your teeth to pry, carry, or hold items. Don’t chew ice, and don’t bite down on non-food items. If you grind your teeth at night, get a custom night guard made to protect your teeth from damage.

These tips can also prevent damage to your natural teeth. A great dental hygiene routine and regular preventive dentistry visits can help keep your smile looking and feeling its best throughout your lifetime.
